From the Principal's Office
Dear Community Members,
I would like to welcome everyone to the 2016-2017 school year. It is an honor to serve as the principal of the Johnson School. I am looking forward to building relationships with the staff, students and families and learning more about the school and community. Over the course of coming year I hope to discover how teaching and learning occurs at the school, and to offer approaches and tools that I feel can augment this important work. I will also investigate and discuss with colleagues ways that we can maximize the learning opportunities offered by a small town that is rich in natural and community resources.

In addition to a new school administration, there are curriculum and technological changes that you will see in the coming year. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has released new science standards for students in grades preK-12. Previous standards identified grade ranges wherein topics were taught. The new standards name the specific grade in which the topic is taught and also promote the integration of other disciplines with the teaching of science.

In the area of technology, classroom teachers will continue to have access to Smartboards and an up-to-date computer lab. To these tools, the school has added 12 ChromeBooks, which function as small laptop computers with touchscreens, and can be used in the classroom. We will also introduce IXL, an online mathematics learning platform that students will have access to and instruction in.

On a more pragmatic note, the staff will be working to help students exit their cars in a safe way that also helps to move vehicles more smoothly through the drop-off lines.
Students should exit their vehicle on the passenger side. Parents may choose to stay in their vehicle as teachers help unload students.
Please help with this process by driving up to the front of the line, near the door that your student will use to enter the building.

Finally, I would like to invite you to a few welcome-back events. Tomorrow morning (August 31st) the PTO will host a Parent Breakfast in the cafeteria following drop-off. On Thursday, September 1st from 6:30-8:30 we will have a Back-to-School Bonfire at Short Beach, sponsored by the Nahant Educational Foundation.

I look forward to seeing you soon.
