Welcome to Nahant School District’s New Superintendent Tony Pierantozzi

Tony Pierantozzi joined the Nahant School District as Superintendent in Nahant on July 1, 2016.

Prior to Nahant, Tony served as a superintendent in the city of Somerville. During his nearly nine years as the chief steward of the Somerville Public Schools, the district made academic gains, including posting substantial district-wide student growth in 2013 MCAS results that placed Somerville as the best performing urban district in the Commonwealth.

Beyond boosting test scores, Tony oversaw the construction of two K-8 schools, instituted the house system at the high school, expanded art and music programming, instituted the El Sistema program, increased afterschool academic and enrichment initiatives, expanded the SMILE program, oversaw unification of the Healey School, supported the Winter Hill Community School in becoming an Innovation School and encouraged consideration of other innovation plans. He introduced Aspirations teams in the schools, creating new leadership roles for teachers and students alike. In the middle grades, he initiated an intramural sports program and re-introduced world language study. He forged enhanced partnerships with local universities. He began laying the groundwork to enhance access to quality early childhood programs throughout the city as well as to further improve college access and career readiness for our graduates.

“Superintendent Pierantozzi has demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and a deep dedication to Somerville’s students, educators, and public education in general,” said School Committee chair Christine Rafal. “He has led faculty to create an aligned and coherent ecology for learning while at the same time encouraging innovative practices.”

Tony has advocated at the state level on issues confronting urban schools. He currently serves on the Massachusetts Graduation and Dropout Prevention and Recovery Commission, and is also a member of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Stakeholder Working Group. He is an active member of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents and the Urban Superintendents Network, which he co-chaired from 2008 to 2013. Tony is also a long-time member of the Somerville Rotary Club (President 2009-2010), and Middlesex Partnerships for Youth (MPY) where he served as President from 2011 to 2013; he is currently Vice-President of MPY.

Moreover, Tony has earned a national reputation for leadership and innovation in student health and wellness, with several Somerville schools receiving USDA “Healthier School” Awards during his tenure.  Tony has several distinguished awards and notable affiliations.  He was among four distinguished members to be inducted to the Salem State University’s 2015 Northeast Educators Hall of Fame. Tony won the Salem State University Alumni Award as an “exemplar of his alma mater who has demonstrated the best practices of Salem State University.”

Prior to Somerville, Tony was a superintendent in the Dennis-Yarmouth School District and the Odessa-Montour District in New York.

He worked as a principal for the Odessa Ithica, N.Y., School District and as Dean of Students for Barnstable Public Schools.

Tony has a Masters degree in Educational Administration from Salem State and a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Rutgers University.

Tony looks forward to working in Nahant.  He says it seems like a wonderful, intimate place where the residents, students and the town employees are committed to continue to making it a great place.”
